MicroDrainage: Two Day Introduction

A comprehensive introduction to sewerage system design and analysis.

Who will benefit?

This is an essential course for anyone new to storm or foul water design and analysis. It is also necessary for those wishing to update their knowledge, gain an understanding of the latest industry best practice and avoid common mistakes.

What will they learn?

The course starts with a short introduction to the drainage industry, relevant legislation and common terminology. Users then complete a series of short exercises designed to introduce new concepts one stage at a time. Each day ends with some longer exercises based around real world examples.

The course covers the main functionality of MicroDrainage, including:

  • Design criteria
  • Design rainfall and rainfall theory
  • Pipe design including:
    • Meeting “Sewers for Adoption” design standards.
    • Non-standard pipe shapes
    • Discharge to existing networks
    • Avoidance of other services, such as gas mains.
    • Storm, foul and combined inputs

Training Course C: Graphical & Advanced Design

A course designed to help engineers release the full productive power of MicroDrainage.

Who will benefit?

All engineers designing or checking drainage networks that are looking to learn how to use the graphical interface and tackle more challenging design problems. A good practical knowledge of MicroDrainage is required or attendance on the Design Fundamentals and Storage, Attenuation and Simulation courses should be completed before coming on this course.

What will they learn?

Learn how to draw complete drainage designs faster and more efficiently by using the graphical design features of DrawNet. Also explore some of the solutions MicroDrainage provides challenging design problems such as connecting to existing networks and dealing with multiple networks.

Training Course D: MDSuDS - SuDS Concepts & Design

A general introduction to the use of MDSuDS at pre-planning stage to assess the existing topography and pre-development situation in terms of greenfield runoff rates and volume. The course then covers how MDSuDS can show the extent of each SuDS system and generate scenarios to ensure that the maximum potential for the land has been delivered for the client with the minimum land take.

Who will benefit?

Developers, consultants and approving authorities would all benefit when motivated to implement a SuDS solution.

What will they learn?

The course covers the key aspects of a SuDS design from concept through to detail design to provide evidence to an approving authority covering water quantity, quality and SuDS treatment train scenarios.

Training Course F: Sustainable Drainage Systems

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are now a central requirement of planning policies in the UK and Ireland. Approving authorities will not accept plans that do not consider SuDS solutions. MicroDrainage has played a central role in making SuDS a practical, measurable addition to the engineer's options for control and flood prevention.

Who will benefit?

All drainage and development control engineers within consultancies, their clients, and the approving authorities and regulators. A good knowledge of MicroDrainage> is essential.

What will they learn?

As well as the practical application of the MicroDrainage SuDS capabilities, engineers will gain an understanding of SUDS policies in England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland.

Course covers the five stage SuDS design methodology applied within MicroDrainage, including:

Training Course G: Greenfield Runoff, Unit Hydrographs and Flood Risk Management Tools

Assessment of greenfield conditions are rapidly becoming a pre-requisite for planning approval. The hydrology capabilities within MicroDrainage enable engineers to design systems that consider the pre-development conditions of the site and can include Greenfield areas in their design. In addition, mapping existing flooding problems is an integral part of flood risk assessments and surface water management plans. Flood risk management tools are needed at the before and throughout a drainage design to ensure developments are suitably designed for exceedence.

Who will benefit?

Drainage and development control engineers within consultancies, EA, SEPA, Local and County Councils. A good practical knowledge of MicroDrainage is essential.

What will they learn?

Engineers will use MicroDrainage to keep site discharges within pre-development runoff limits and to incorporate Greenfield areas into their designs. Important aspects of flood risk assessment work are all covered by this course to ensure compliance with the statutory service levels for flood planning.

  • Deriving Peak Flows from undeveloped & partly urbanised catchments
  • The application of complex controls to meet allowable discharge limits for new developments
  • Producing runoff hydrographs from undeveloped greenfield sites
  • Combining & analysing flows from urban & rural catchments, to comply with flood risk zoning
  • Analysing sites for pre-development flood conditions
  • Checking flood flow paths on integrated urban drainage systems

An overview of the theory and the statutory requirements are included in the course. Delegates will be guided through worked examples to illustrate the methodology, which include sites bounded by rivers and streams.


 

Training Course H: Checking and Auditing MicroDrainage Submissions

A course designed to help checking/development control engineers to assess a Micro Drainage submission.

Who will benefit?

All engineers checking drainage networks for compliance with SFA, the Interim Code of Practice for SuDS, the Code for Sustainable Homes, Climate Change and Exceedance. A good practical knowledge of MicroDrainage is required.

What will they learn?

The impact of a new development upon the existing catchment is a key aspect of this course, which covers determining greenfield runoff, SuDS feasibility, storage estimates, hydraulic performance and a full range of testing from minimum pipe diameters to self-cleansing velocities.
