Stormwater and Sanitary Network Modeling with XPSWMM (US)

Training Course

The first day will focus on basic and intermediate stormwater modeling, starting with basic hydrology and hydraulics. The second day will then move into simulating Low Impact development and open channel modeling. The latter part of Day 2 will introduce 1D/2D modeling. The final day will continue with 1D/2D modeling in urban areas including the simulation of flood wall failure. The last half of the day will be dedicated to sanitary and combined sewer modeling.

Innovyze Workshops cater to a variety of skill levels. However, to make the best use of class time it is recommended that anyone who attends a training go through the Getting Started Manual for XPSWMM/XPStorm. This requires access to a license of the software. If you do not have access to a license, please contact your representative.

Attendance at this workshop will provide a certificate of completion for 7 Professional Development Hours per day.

XPSWMM/XPStorm Interface and Hydrology Analysis

  • XPSWMM/XPStorm Graphical User Interface (GUI)
  • SCS Hydrologic Methods and SWMM Hydrologic Methods
  • Add a DTM layer, background image and Import nodes, links and catchments from shape files
  • Use tools to calculate subcatchment areas, catchment assignment and hydrologic parameters
  • Create Design Storms
  • Solve and Review Hydrologic Results

Hydraulic Analysis

  • Review 1D Hydraulics Theory/Capability
  • Create a 1D Hydraulic model from various Import capabilities
  • Troubleshoot and Run a XPSWMM/XPStorm model
  • Solve and Review Hydraulic Results
  • Use Global Storms and compare model runs

Modeling Low Impact Development (LID)

  • Flow redirection of impervious flow to pervious surfaces
  • Modeling rainwater storage tanks, rain gardens, bioretention swales, etc
  • Modeling pervious pavement
  • Model infiltration trenches
  • Continuous Simulation

Advanced Stormwater Modeling Tools

  • Automated Conduit Sizing
  • Surface Ponding and Node Storage
  • Dual drainage
  • Pond storage and optimization
  • Outlet Structures

  • Generate cross-sections from a Digital Terrain Model

Sanitary and Combined Sewer Structures

  • XP pumping options
  • Regulators
  • Real Time Control examples

Sanitary Sewer Modeling:

  • Review Sanitary Flow Theory
  • Build a sanitary sewer model using external data
  • Enter dry weather data using XPX files
  • Add a pump station
  • Develop wet weather flows using the RTK method
  • Obtain results from the output file and the Review Results tool
  • Comparison of Wet and Dry weather scenarios

Introduction to 1D/2D Integrated Modeling in Urban Areas
